About
Tom Smith is Manchester-based musician who specialises in cornet, trumpet, music technology and video editing. Tom graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2022 with First Class Honours, where he studied Music Performance on cornet under Professor Roger Webster and Richard Marshall.
Tom is the principal cornet of the world-famous Brighouse and Rastrick Brass band, where he works closely with resident conductor Ian McElligott, and professional conductor Professor David King. He is also a founding member of the innovative Northern Quarters Brass Quartet.
Tom is also a performing artist for Besson instrument manufacturers, playing on a Besson Prestige 2028 cornet.
Born in Cornwall, Tom started playing in the Camborne Youth Brass Band at the age of 9, where he stayed until moving to Manchester in 2018. During this time, he was taught by Alan Pope BEM, who is also the conductor of the band. Before moving north, Tom was the assistant principal cornet of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and a member of various county youth ensembles, such as the Cornwall Youth Brass Ensemble and Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestra.
From 2018 onwards, Tom worked his way up the Midlands and Yorkshire banding scenes, playing for bands such as Pemberton Old Wigan DW Band and Grimethorpe Colliery Band, before being appointed at Brighouse and Rastrick Band.
Alongside performance, Tom has a keen interest in audio and video production, especially in the context of brass. For examples of these, be sure to browse the Tom Smith Cornet YouTube Channel!
